Which Darknet Market Has Replaced DarkMarket?
Understanding the Dark Market
In order to gain information on the analysed marketplaces, we collected additional data from the Gwern archive on dark marketplace closures1. To compile comprehensive information, we also used law enforcement documents on closures as well as a number of online forums31,32,34 dedicated to discussing dark marketplaces (see Supplementary Information Section S2). Out of the selected marketplaces, 12 were subject to an exit scam, 9 were raided, 3 were voluntarily closed by their administrators, and 7 are still active.
The term dark market refers to a segment of the internet that operates outside of traditional law enforcement and regulations.
These markets are typically accessed through specific software, enabling anonymity for both buyers and sellers.
Characteristics of Dark Markets
For each dark marketplace m that was shut down, we identify users who started trading on another coexisting marketplace \(m’\) after the closure of m. If a user was trading on both marketplaces m and \(m’\) before the closure of marketplace m, the user is not labelled as a migrant to marketplace \(m’\). In addition to dark web markets, hacker forums are one of the dark web platforms where sales are made. The recent Ukraine-Russia war was reflected in the cyber world, and nationalist Russian threat actors came together in some forums. The migration of vendors, plus the timing and source of OMG’s initial revenue suggests that Hydra administrators may have been involved with the development of OMG.
The investigation into AlphaBay revealed that numerous vendors sold fentanyl and heroin, and there have been multiple overdose deaths across the country attributed to purchases on the site. Stanley has spent more than ten years living in Poland, mostly based in Kraków and Bielsko-Biała. He founded Notes from Poland in 2014 as a blog dedicated to personal impressions, cultural analysis and political commentary.
Dark markets are known for several key features:
In doing so, Pavlov is alleged to have facilitated Hydra’s activities and allowed Hydra to reap commissions worth millions of dollars generated from the illicit sales conducted through the site. The Justice Department announced today the seizure of Hydra Market (Hydra), the world’s largest and longest-running darknet market. In 2021, Hydra accounted for an estimated 80% of all darknet market-related cryptocurrency transactions, and since 2015, the marketplace has received approximately $5.2 billion in cryptocurrency.
- Anonymity: Users can engage in transactions without revealing their identities.
- Cryptocurrency Transactions: Most dark markets prefer digital currencies like Bitcoin for payments.
- Variety of Goods: Items for sale range from illegal drugs and weapons to stolen data and counterfeit products.
- User Ratings: Buyers and sellers rate each other to build reputations and trust.
Any transaction between two “other” nodes is excluded from our dataset. In this schematic representation, the dotted square includes transactions included in our dataset. Infinity Forum will target NATO and Western countries with its ideological aims throughout the Russian-Ukrainian war. Another topic in modern DWMs is the transactions made with cryptocurrency and the concept of crypto laundry. DWMs, where most of these transactions are made with Bitcoin, are said to be one of the mechanisms that keep the crypto market alive, according to some researchers.
Figure 6c shows that, when marketplaces are ranked according to transaction volume, the second-largest marketplace is preferred in the majority of cases (31.8%). However, a closer look at the data reveals that a Russian marketplace often occupies the top ranks in terms of volume but it tends not to be the preferred migration harbour, probably due language and geographical barriers. Excluding the Russian marketplace from the ranking, we find that, in fact, the largest marketplace by volume is selected 41% of the time (see Fig. 6d).
There is a new darknet Reddit search engine for cybercriminals to search illegal merchandise in darknet markets – top UX for online fraud. Although enforcement efforts continue to target the darknet markets and the shipping of illegal products, these markets continue to grow due to the technical difficulties encountered in actually tracking down the buyers and sellers. These markets exist on the Tor network in order to create security and anonymity for both users and darknet providers. Transactions take place via a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin using dark wallets to protect the seller and buyer. The payment is held in escrow by the site operator to discourage scammers.
The Risks Involved
Participating in a dark market involves significant dangers:
- Legal Risks: Buying or selling illegal items can result in criminal charges.
- Scams and Fraud: Many transactions can lead to theft or loss of funds.
- Malware Exposure: Users may unknowingly download harmful software while browsing.
How to Access Dark Markets
- Some also have a rating system for vendors, just like the original Silk Road.
- Excluding the Russian marketplace from the ranking, we find that, in fact, the largest marketplace by volume is selected 41% of the time (see Fig. 6d).
- Cryptocurrency cash-out services are not only advertised on Dark Web markets; this has never been the case.
- Also, unlike most competitors, the new version of AlphaBay only allows users to buy and sell in the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero, not Bitcoin, transactions of which can often be tracked through blockchain surveillance.
- Europol (2017) estimated that most physical counterfeits on dark markets are sold for one-third of the actual price.
Accessing a dark market typically involves the following steps:
- Download and install a Tor browser to ensure secure browsing.
- Obtain cryptocurrency for transactions.
- Find dark market links, often shared in forums or communities.

- Silk Road: One of the original and most famous dark markets.

- Dream Market: Known for its variety of products and relatively user-friendly interface.
